What's So Great About Christianity

Is Christianity true ? Can an intelligent, college-educated person really believe the Bible ? Or do the atheists have it right ? Has Christianity been disproven by science, debunked as a force for good, and discredited as a guide to morality ?

Bestselling author Dinesh D’Souza (What’s So Great About America) approaches Christianity with a skeptical eye, but treats the skeptics with equal skepticism. The result is a book that will challenge the assumptions of both believers and doubters and affirm that there really is, indeed, something great about Christianity.

Dinesh D'Souza debates Dan Barker (FFRF.org) at the Prestonwood Christian Academy, Plano, Texas - November 19, 2009

The Question:

The Miracle Of The Sun In Fatima

The Miracle of the Sun in Fatima on October 13, 1917.

The Miracle of the Sun (Portuguese: O Milagre do Sol) is an alleged miraculous event witnessed by 30,000 to 100,000 people on 13 October 1917 in the Cova da Iria fields near Fátima, Portugal. Those in attendance had assembled to observe what the Portuguese secular newspapers had been ridiculing for months as the absurd claim of three shepherd children that a miracle was going to occur at high-noon in the Cova da Iria on 13 October 1917.

According to many witness statements, after a downfall of rain, the dark clouds broke and the sun appeared as an opaque, spinning disc in the sky. It was said to be significantly duller than normal, and to cast multicolored lights across the landscape, the shadows on the landscape, the people, and the surrounding clouds. The sun was then reported to have careened towards the earth in a zigzag pattern, frightening some of those present who thought it meant the end of the world. Anecdotally, some witnesses reported that their previously wet clothes became "suddenly and completely dry."

Our Lady of Fátima (Portuguese: Nossa Senhora de Fátima) (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈfatimɐ]) is a title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary with respect to reported apparitions of her to three shepherd children at Fátima on the 13th day of six consecutive months in 1917, starting on May 13. The three children were Lúcia Santos and her cousins, siblings Jacinta and Francisco Marto. The title of Our Lady of the Rosary is also sometimes used in reference to the same apparition (although it was first used in 1208 for the reported apparition in the church of Prouille), because the children related that the apparition specifically identified herself as the "Lady of the Rosary".

Theodosius I

Flavius Theodosius (11 January 347 – 17 January 395), commonly known as Theodosius I or Theodosius the Great, was Roman Emperor from 379 to 395. Theodosius was the last emperor to rule over both the eastern and the western halves of the Roman Empire.

He is known for making Nicene Christianity the official state religion of the Roman Empire, issuing decrees that effectively made the Catholic Church the state religion of the Roman Empire.

Theodosius I was a Catholic.

After his death, Theodosius' sons Arcadius and Honorius inherited the East and West halves respectively, and the Roman Empire was never again re-united.

15 Documents Every Catholic Should Read

Marcel of of Aggie Catholics has listed down 15 documents every Catholic should read:
  1. The Holy Bible. No replacement for Divine Inspiration. Several good commentaries available.
  2. The Catechism of the Catholic Church. The basics of the faith in an accessible format. The first general catechism in nearly 400 years. I recommend the Pauline edition.
  3. The 4 Dogmatic Constitutions of Vatican II. While I recommend that everyone eventually read all 16 documents of Vatican II, start with these 4.
  4. Humanae Vitae - Pope Paul VI. The encyclical that rocked the Church.
  5. Theology of the Body - John Paul II.
  6. Writings of the Church Fathers. There is a ton of stuff out there. So, I recommend both this one-volume book or, even better, this three-volume set of books on the Church Fathers.
  7. JPII's most important encyclicals - Veritatis Splendor, Redemptor Hominis, Laborem Exercens, Centesimus Annus, Evangelium Vitae, Dives in Misericordia, Redemptoris Missio, and Fides et Ratio. All of these can be found on the Vatican's website.
  8. Pope Benedict's three encyclicals.
  9. Spiritual Writings of the Saints. This is a huge category. I would start with the mystics - St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Bonaventure, St. Bernard, etc. and the Doctors of the Church.
  10. Code of Canon Law. I don't necessarily recommend a cover-to-cover reading, but at least a good introduction to it. This is a decent intro.
  11. Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church.
  12. General Directory for Catechesis.
  13. Evangelii Nuntiandi - Pope Paul VI. On evangelization.
  14. St. Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologica.
  15. History of the Catholic Church. I recommend the Warren Carroll four-volume version. If you want a shorter volume, try Triumph by Crocker.
I would add Confessions by St. Augustine.

Do you have any others ?

Diabolic Influence

At a time when people are fascinated by the supernatural and paranormal, Fr Pat Collins CM, a lecturer in spirituality at All Hallows Dublin, shares his experience in this area, and gives some practical advice.

Earlier in the year I participated in three television programmes to do with the supernatural and the paranormal, which included the issue of disturbed houses and exorcism. They in turn generated a great deal of media interest. During one hectic fortnight I was interviewed by three T.V. stations, 20 radio stations and six or seven newspapers. I suspect that all this curiosity about the supernatural is due to the fact that nowadays an increasing number of people adopt a this-woridly rather than an otherworldly point of view. What's real to them are, here and now, tangible things that can be understood in a scientific way. However, the spiritual realm has an uncanny ability of unexpectedly intruding itself into our materialistic world by means of such things as poltergeist activity, ghostly presences, and demonic infestation of places and people.

"Strange phenomena in homes"

For many years now I have lectured and written about spirituality and the psychology of religion, both of which deal with the supernatural realm. As a result, I have received phone calls from people all over Ireland who were frightened because of strange phenomena in their homes, ranging from objects moving, to electrical appliances going on and off. Some of them had been so terrified by what was happening that they fled from their homes. Others, suspected that either they themselves, or someone they loved was under the influence of an evil spirit. In desperation they asked me to help. Usually I encouraged them to talk to their local clergy. However, most of them responded by saying that they had already done so, but the priests they had spoken to had either dismissed their stories in a sceptical manner, offered ineffective prayers or admitted that they were not competent to help.

"Ordinary explanations"

My heart goes out to victims of house disturbances. As a result of study, reflection and prayer I have become clearer, over the years, about what might be involved in these cases. Quite often disturbances in a house will have a perfectly ordinary explanation such as noisy pipes, creaking floorboards and electrical faults. I visited a widow's home some time ago. She was frightened and felt there was some sort of evil spirit active in her upstairs rooms. Quite frankly, when I chatted with her, I felt that her overheated imagination was interpreting every little sound as evidence of an alien presence. I reassured her, said a prayer for peace of mind, and as far as I know she has had no more trouble.

"Paranormal influences"

In other cases, things like nises and movement of objects are probably due to paranormal influences such as psycho-kinesis. In other words they are natural but, as yet, not well understood. For example, poltergeist activity is often associated with the presence of a young woman who may have a good deal of suppressed sexual energy. I know one family where strange sounds were at their worst when a particular daughter, of about twenty, was having her period. When she left the house the poltergeist activity ended. By the way, the noises didn't frighten the young woman at all.

"Ghosts"

There is circumstantial evidence which indicates that the spirits of the un-quiet dead sometimes remain in contact with a house. It would appear that when a person dies, his or her soul may be reluctant to leave its familiar, earthly surroundings. In my experience such spirits often seem to have suffered some kind of injustice or trauma in that location. For example, I visited one house where the whimper of a baby was often heard. Then by chance the family learned that a baby had been abused in the house, years before they bought it. One can pray in such a place, urging the restless soul to move on to meet with a loving and merciful God.

"Evil spirits"

Over the years I have also come to recognize that some houses are disturbed by the presence of some kind of evil spirit. There are tell-tale signs of negative infestations, such as inexplicable coldness, a bad smell, objects disappearing from sight, and damage to sacred objects such as a crucifix. As a recent "Would You Believe " programme indicated, I dealt with a such case in Northern Ireland, where it was claimed that holy water boiled, a prayer to Michael the Archangel spontaneously went on fire, and a crucifix, rosary and other religious objects were flung on the floor. Following careful diagnosis, Church of Ireland canon. Billy Lendrum and myself said a cleansing prayer. Thank God it was effective. The couple moved back into their home and have had no problems since.

While the clergy should help people with house disturbances, the scriptures clearly indicate, that exorcism of people is a priority. Christians distinguish between obsession and possession by evil spirits. When people are obsessed, they suffer from a sort of spiritual neurosis where only part of their personality is subject to demonic influence. As I know from experience, obsessed people need a simple exorcism which can be prayed by any faith-filled believer. For instance, I can remember praying, a number of years ago, for a twelve year old girl who had been involved in the occult. I asked the Spirit of God to free her from a morbid spirit of divination. Thankfully, it was effective and she experienced inner peace from then onwards.

"Possession"

When people are possessed, they suffer from a form of spiritual psychosis because the devil seems to take over their entire personalities. As a result they can have extraordinary physical strength which is inconsistent with their age or state of health, and also an ability to speak unknown languages and to discern hidden and distant things. I have never met a possessed person in over 30 years. The vast majority of the bizarre behaviours I have come across can be explained in medical and psychiatric ways e.g. schizophrenia or Tourette's syndrome. Truly possessed people need solemn exorcism by a priest who has been officially appointed, for that purpose, by the bishop.

As you can see from these brief examples, disturbances of places and people can be due to a number of causes. Those who want to deal with them effectively need to be familiar with psychology, the paranormal, the notion of the restless dead, and the possibility of infestation by evil. Not all priests or lay people would be expected to know about such things, any more than all doctors would be expected to know all about rare diseases. Good doctors refer difficult medical cases to specialists. Surely, priests and others should be able to refer difficult cases to diocesan specialists. The the Catholic Church needs to appoint exorcists who have been trained to deal, not only with disturbed buildings but also with people who are oppressed by evil.

The Shrine of Saint Joseph: Church of Miracles

The Shrine of St. Joseph is an extraordinary Catholic shrine in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. The majestic and stately appearance of this 19th Century architectural treasure is almost breath taking. The handcrafted wooden statues stand guardians of the historical richness, which is both extraordinary and miraculous.

Since 1864, this church has been the Church of Miracles. A German immigrant, Ignatius Strecker, was healed from terminal illness after he venerated a relic of Peter Claver. This miraculous healing led to the canonization of Peter Claver as a saint of the Catholic Church. Two years later there was another miracle at the church, and then another, and another. How many more miracles have taken place in connection with this church over the past 150 years, no one knows.

Many of this church's supporters say the fact that St. Joseph's is still standing today is a miracle in itself. It has survived declining parish membership, neglect, urban decay, vandalism, and acts of violence within its wall. More than one hundred years after the first miracle, a group of five men began an effort that would ultimately save this church. "The Shrine of St. Joseph: Church of Miracles" is a moving testimony to the faith and commitment of the Friends of St. Joseph to preserve this historic landmark church in a downtown St. Louis neighborhood that is also being rebuilt.

Bible, Tradition and Church

"And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My Church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven..."
Matthew 16:18

Some Christians claim that there is no need for a Church as guardian of the truth, since the Bible is the sole rule of faith. To prove their position they usually cite:

... and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. [2 Tim 3:15-17, NASB]

On closer examination it becomes apparent that these verses really do not teach on the sufficiency of the Bible. Verse 17 (especially when verse 14 is ignored) seems to imply the sufficiency of Scripture "for every good work," but no connection is made to salvation, a key part of the faith. Verse 15 connects the importance of sacred writings to salvation, but these writings are those that Timothy knew since childhood, i.e. Old Testament only. Even though verse 16 enumerates the great utility of "All Scripture" for teaching the faith, still no sufficiency is implied. A glass of water is profitable for health, but not sufficient, since air and food are also needed to live.

It is ironic that in 2 Tim 3:14, Timothy is told: "continue in the things you have learned ...knowing from whom you have learned them." This verse strongly suggests Apostolic Tradition. In the same letter, Timothy is informed on how to pass on Christ's teachings:

...things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. [2 Tim 2:2]

St. Paul actually commands the Thessalonian Christians to hold fast to the Traditions taught by the Apostles, both oral and written:

So then brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us. [2 Thess 2:15; see 1 Cor 11:2]

Finally if everything that Jesus and the Apostles did and taught were recorded in the Bible, then why did St. John close his Gospel with this curious verse:

But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. [John 21:25, RSV; see 20:30]

or his last two Epistles with these verses: 2 John 12 and 3 John 13-14?

Jesus in Mark 7:5-13 or Matt. 15:1-9 does not condemn all traditions but those corrupted by the Pharisees. Unlike the human traditions of the Pharisees, Apostolic Tradition is God's Word spoken through the Apostles, not recorded in the Bible. The Church as promised by Christ (Matt 16:18-19, see front panel; Matt 18:17-18) preserves and teaches the Apostolic Tradition. This Church is the pillar and support of the truth, as is written:

... you may know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the Church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth. [1 Tim 3:15, NASB; see Eph 2:19-21]

Another function of the Church is to explain passages in the Bible. St. Peter warns about teachings in Scripture that are difficult to understand:

... as also in all his (St. Paul's) letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. [2 Pet 3:15-16]

According to the Bible, the disciples had to explain the Scriptures. An example is St. Philip explaining the Book of Isaiah to the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:30-31. Also this function of the Church includes interpreting the Bible:

But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation; for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. [2 Pet 1:20-21]

St. Peter in this passage warns us not to personally interpret God's message (prophecy) in Scripture. The Church being "men moved by the Holy Spirit" can only rightfully serve at this capacity.

Even though the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, it is not the only guiding rule of faith. Both the Bible and Apostolic Tradition are the Word of God. Both are important sources for the Faith. The Catholic Church being the Church founded by Christ preserves both from corruption and uses both to teach God's Word with guidance from the Holy Spirit (Matt 28:16-20; John 16:12-15).

The Shroud Of Turin Displayed The First Time In 10 Years

Picture from The New Tork Times

Last Sunday, Pope Benedict XVI visited the iconic Shroud of Turin, venerating Christianity's most famous relic, which went on display last month for the first time in 10 years.

The shroud, a centuries-old linen cloth, went on public display at the Turin Cathedral on April 10 for the first time since undergoing a major restoration in 2002. It was last on display in 2000.

The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth bearing the image of a man who appears to have suffered physical trauma in a manner consistent with crucifixion. It is kept in the royal chapel of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin, northern Italy.

The origins of the shroud and its image are the subject of intense debate among scientists, theologians, historians and researchers. Some contend that the shroud is the cloth placed on the body of Jesus Christ at the time of his burial, and that the face image is the Holy Face of Jesus. Others contend that the artifact postdates the Crucifixion of Jesus by more than a millennium. Both sides of the argument use science and historical documents to make their case.

While the Vatican has not officially endorsed the shroud as a relic of Jesus, it has not discouraged popular devotion.

The shroud is currently associated with Catholic devotions to the Holy Face of Jesus when in 1958 Pope Pius XII approved of the image.

The Power Of Prayer

This is an interview with Catholic Charismatic Ellen Chaksil sharing the messages she has received from God since 1978.

Ellen Chaksil began receiving messages from God after her initiation into a Catholic Charismatic prayer group. Nearly 30 years ago, the words, "When they are threatened with the loss of all this, only then will they turn to Me," sprang into Ellen's consciousness. She had a vision of chaos surrounding the steps of the Vatican's St. Peter's Basilica. She felt instinctively that humanity was threatened and she needed to share what she experienced with church officials.

Her quest led her from her home in Peckville, Pennsylvania to the Vatican. After numerous attempts, she was able to make contact. In 1992, she met Pope John Paul II and in 1996 she received official recognition that he had read her letter detailing the prophecy.

Seeking a way to prevent a future disaster, Ellen contacted Boguslaw Lipinski, Ph.D of Harvard Medical School. He provided hypothetical proof that when people gather to pray, energy is emitted. Armed with this scientific evidence, Ellen views her book as an instrument to educate people on the power of prayer. Only when the world is united in prayer can a power be generated great enough to forestall catastrophe and enable humanity's continued existence.

Mere Christianity

Listen to C.S Lewis' views on Christianity

Part 1

Part 2

One of C.S Lewis' most influential pieces of work, Mere Christianity has become a corner stone of modern Christian apologetics. Originally broadcast on the radio as a lecture during World War Two, C.S Lewis would eventually turn the transcripts from the radio broadcast into three individual pamphlets, these in turn would be later compiled to create the iconic book that is 'Mere Christianity'.

A former Atheist himself, Lewis once exclaimed "Had God designed the world, it would not be A world so frail and faulty as we see."

Mere Christianity deals with the basic beliefs upheld by all Christians, and on purpose, Lewis avoids singling out any one denomination, instead focusing on fundamental teachings of the Christian faith.

This audio adaption is read aloud by Jeffrey Howard.
