Promoting The New Evangelisation Is A Christian Obligation

The Church must present the world with a missionary zeal by promoting a new evangelisation.

This is the reason that led Benedict XVI to create the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelisation.

The body, chaired by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, was launched yesterday at the Vatican, together with a Motu Proprio establishing the new Vatican department.

The tasks of the Pontifical Council concern the spread of the Christian message in an appropriate manner, using new technology, and being at the service of bishops and bishops' conferences. In fact the root of all evangelisation, noted the Pope, isn't a human plan of expansion, but the desire to share the inestimable gift that God as He wanted us to do, participating in his own life.

This new Vatican office is charged with coordinating plans to renew the vigor of the faith in regions where it was once dominant, but has lost ground to the forces of secularization- notably Europe and North America.

In establishing the Council for the New Evangelization the Pope said "The Church has the duty to announce the Gospel of Jesus Christ always and everywhere. I feel it appropriate to offer an adequate response so that the entire Church, allowing herself to be regenerated by the Holy Spirit, may present herself to the modern world with a missionary vigor capable of promoting a new evangelisation".
